The dispute is entirely political. Russia is loosing more money by not sending gas than they were trying to squeeze out of Ukraine. Russian gas storages are full, so they will soon have to start burning their gas because they have nowhere to put it. The purpose of this gas war with Ukraine is the same as the purpose of the hot war with Georgia - to prevent the European integration of either nation and keep it within the Russian sphere of influence.
